Biography
Giancarlo Mari, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., F.A.I.U.M., M.B.A., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as the Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, at UTHSC. He also serves as the Director of the High Risk Obstetrics Center of Excellence at the MED. Dr. Mari joined UTHSC in May of 2008. He has pioneered the assessment of the fetal circulation with Doppler ultrasound. During his tenure at Yale University, he was the principal investigator of a multicenter research project that has brought non-invasive Doppler ultrasound techniques to the diagnosis of fetal anemia. This has become the standard of care for the diagnosis of fetal anemia in the US, as well as in many areas of the world. Prior to this discovery, many babies were dying in-utero because of invasive and often unnecessary procedures. This has been considered one of the most important achievements in fetal medicine.
